About WHOIS

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is a query and response protocol that is widely used for querying databases that store the registered users or assignees of an Internet resource, such as a domain name, an IP address block or an autonomous system.

Most registries now publish the same data over RDAP, a JSON version of WHOIS with consistent field names. This tool asks the registry directly, so what you see is what the registry holds right now. Since 2018 most personal contact details are redacted under GDPR, which is why the owner usually shows as privacy protected.

Common status codes

ok / active: Normal, nothing pending
clientTransferProhibited: Transfer lock set by the registrar
clientDeleteProhibited: Cannot be deleted without unlocking
clientUpdateProhibited: Contact and DNS changes locked
clientHold: Removed from DNS, usually unpaid or disputed
pendingDelete: Expired, about to drop, may become available
